On 19 November SIBAHE - the Slovenian Food Bank - organized a conference about how to lower food waste in Slovenia. Best practices were shared by speakers from international organizations: European Food Banks Federation (FEBA), Banco Alimentare (Italian Food Bank), WSS Effect and Food Bank Macedonia, and SIBAHE (Slovenian Food Bank).
The speakers presented their current projects to lower food waste. Ms Angela Frigo from FEBA presented the European network and how the food donations are facilitated in Europe. Mr Vincenzo Palumbo presented the Banco Alimentare network and the LIFE project which is currently in progress in Italy at a national level and which focuses on food waste prevention. After a short break, Ms Stojne Todorovska presented the Food Bank Macedonia and the project to reduce food waste which is developed in collaboration with SIBAHE and FEBA. The last speaker was Mr Alen Novit who presented the activities of SIBAHE.
The participants were food producers, retailers or people from the Chambers of Commerce. They had the opportunity to ask questions. A lot of interest was expressed about the overall operations and the functioning of the food bank models, in particularly about SIBAHE functioning and progress. There were also questions and interests about the LIFE project, how it operates and how it could be developed as a broader project in the coming years.
The main goal of the conference was achieved: to raise awareness about food waste prevention and about SIBAHE and the food bank model in general.
