In the recent years, food banks have begun to consider the (positive) environmental impact of recovering and distributing surplus food. 

1417711567016This dimension has always existed, but we now see the first attempts to evaluate the magnitude of this pillar of our actions regarding the environment. During the FEBA annual convention, new research was presented showing the link between the recovery of surplus food, and the reduction of C02 emissions and water wastage. Wasted food creates C02, not only by being thrown into a landfill, but also through the energy needed for the production of the food before it reaches the supermarket. Did you know that if food waste was a country, it would be the third largest emitter of C02, after China and The US.

Food banks will, in the years to come, begin to play a larger strategic role in the fight against climate change and protection of natural resources.

Keeping food banks alive, should therefor become an important political priority, as they do not only contribute to the social support of disadvantaged people through food aid, but also to the preservation of natural resources of the planet by recovering food surpluses.
